1981 AMC Spirit AMX Pace Car

PPG sponsored a competition among five manufacturers to design a custom pace car for the 1981 IndyCar World Series. AMC took a Spirit AMX and built a completely new fiberglass body and added a turbocharged and fuel injected 258 ci inline six. The result is a one of one factory custom car! Vintage Mopar NASCAR Photo of the Week: Bobby Allison/Rossi 1969 Dodge Charger 500

This is a picture of the Bobby Allison 1969 Dodge Charger 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.  This car was owned and built by Rossi Automotive Engineering.  You can see Bobby putting the bumble bee stripe himself on the back of the car–imagine a current NASCAR driver putting his own decals on the car!

Ralph Gilles Discusses the 2014 Viper TA with Adam Corolla

SRT CEO Ralph Gilles discusses the 2014 Viper TA with Adam Corolla. The specs include; 3390 lbs, two mode suspension, bigger Bembo brakes, active aero devices generating an additional 600 lbs of down force and 355 rear meats. Per Ralph,“The new 2014 SRT Viper TA is being engineering for the dedicated track enthusiast, who still wants to drive to the track and take their hobby to the next level. Our engineers revised the suspension settings to refocus the Viper specifically for track duty, using a blend of components from the GTS and the SRT models, add in the extensively developed aero package and the new Time Attack package is born.” See more at Allpar. Vintage Mopar NASCAR Photo of the Week: Cotton Owens Garage Circa 1967

Want to see what a Championship NASCAR garage looked like in 1967? Well here you go. This is from early 1967 just after the COG had won the 1966 Grand National Championship. Owens was one of the main factory sponsored Chrysler teams at the time and he had a lot of cars to work with compared to other teams in 1967. You can see two 1966 Dodge Charger’s here and you can see what a NASCAR cage looked like in 1967.  The cage was still pretty primitive at this point in Grand National history. Full door bars were not mandatory until 1968.

1968 Plymouth Barracuda Factory B029 for Sale

In a recent post about a Sox and Martin Barracuda that was for sale, I noted that since they only produced about 50 and that “these cars do not become available very often”. OK, I was wrong. While it doesn’t have the provenance of the Sox and Martin car, this non-numbers matching, Ray Barton built Hemi Barracuda is still one to lust after. See the details at Hemmings. 1988 Jeep Comanche Race Truck on eBay

Tommy Archer has been with the Chrysler Group’s racing and development team for the past 18 years. In 1989 he raced this very truck at Lime Rock, winning the event. It’s a survivor race truck with only 4000 miles! The only updates are the fuel cell, replacement Hoosier tires, a new front spoiler and a bigger racing seat. The interior looks amazingly stock for a race winning truck. Wouldn’t it be cool to enter it in vintage races? See more detail at Bring A Trailer. The eBay ad was pulled 04Nov after apparently reaching only $5300. See the new, reposted, ad on eBay.  More pis after the jump!

Vintage Mopar NASCAR Photo of the Week: Buddy Baker’s Street Charger 500 and Race Car at the 1969 Bristol Race

This photo of the #3 Dodge Charger driven by Buddy Baker and built by Ray Fox was taken at the 1969 Bristol Race. It is interesting because it shows the stock version of the car alongside the race version. The white Charger 500 is still around today and was probably given to Baker by Chrysler.

1965 Plymouth Sport Fury Indy Pace Car For Sale on Hemmings

1965 was the first (and last) year that a Plymouth was selected as the Indianapolis 500 pace car. The chosen model was the Sport Fury convertible. There were 35 actual pace cars built for the race. Plymouth also produced one replica for each dealership in the country. That number varies between 1,300 and 1,900, depending on who you believe. See a very nice replica for sale on Hemmings.
