Movie Mopar of the Week: Joe Dirt’s 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona

You think Vin Diesil’s Daytona is cool? What about Joe Dirt’s Daytona? There is a great writeup on this car over at Californiaclassix. Can you believe the original movie car sold for just $18,000 back in 2002?

Joe Dirt fans should also check out our blog on Joe Dirt’s 1967 GTX convertible. Oh, and check out the video after the jump!

  1. Decoding the VIN gives:
    VIN XP29F9B103293 decodes as follows:

    Model: Dodge Charger X
    Price Class: Premium P
Body Type: 2 door sports hardtop 29
    Engine: 318ci V8 2bbl (LA motor) F
    Year: 1969 9
    Assembly Plant: Hamtramck, MI B
    Sequence Number: 103293 103293

Per the VIN, the car started life as a plain old 318 powered Charger. Charger Daytonas VIN’s began with XX.
And why the backwards scoops on the fenders?

    • Nascar rules back then required in order to race, 500 cars of any given race car had to be mfg for sale to the public in dealerships for daily driving – remember this was still called “Stock Car” racing and their motto was Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday.

Long story short, the scoops were put on the car so underneath them could be cut out to give the front tires fender clearance when they lowered the car for racing.

The wing had to be put on that high (yes, they knew they only needed 2″ of height for it to aerodynamically work) to clear the trunk lid – the down-force it generated was too much for trunk latches to hold and besides, was too heavy for normal trunk lifting anyways so they mounted it to the quarter panels.
