BangShift located this 1970 Plymouth Cuda on Craigslist. A very cool looking car that apparently has quite a history. Originally an export car to a Pakistan embacy boy.(What?) It was then purchased by the lengendary Earnest Montgomery of Clinton MD. (Bangshift can find no info on this racer. He may be legit but, if so, maybe drop the legendary part.) Many a driver enjoyed racing success with the mighty 426. Don Garlits was one of the first to receive the new motor in 1964. To quote Don, “In my humble opinion, the Chrysler/Dodge 426 Hemi engine, was/is the best production engine ever manufactured by the automotive industry! No engine, to my knowledge, has the ability to produce so much raw power and still stay together. The combination package of the original Snake and Mongoose haulers, Don Prudhomme’s original 1970 Cuda and a McEwan tribute Plymouth Duster didn’t hit reserve (which was evidently north of $1 million) at Barrett Jackson. They were later sold privately to Rick Hendrick. See more at Hemmings.
You’re looking at a very true-to-the-original replica of Hurri-Cane II, a car that was campaigned by Bob Cain of Massachusetts back in the day. This isn’t a show circuit car. The cigar smoking, drag racing Dick Landy put a straight axle from an A100 van under his 1964 Dodge 330 and radically altered the wheelbase to create a drag car that was referred to as a funny car because, well, it looked funny. If a cream colored 1965 Dodge Coronet station wagon pulls up next to you at a light and the engine revs in that tell-tale way indicating that the driver would like to “compare” powertrains, don’t be so quick to take him up on his offer. In a recent post about a Sox and Martin Barracuda that was for sale, I noted that since they only produced about 50 and that “these cars do not become available very often”. OK, I was wrong.
